Denton Community Theatre HistoryDenton Community Theatre, Inc. is one of the oldest arts groups in Denton and has provided over twenty-five (25) continuous years of theatrical experiences for the Denton area. Denton Community Theatre, Inc. was charted as a non-profit educational organization under 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code in August, 1969. It has operated as a full time community theatre continuously since that time. Denton Community Theatre, Inc. has conducted numerous educational programs, both artistic and theatrical, for children and adults of all socio-economic levels, nationalities and races. Denton Community Theatre, Inc. was one of the founding organizations of the Greater Denton Arts Council, and is active in Texas Non-Profit Theatres, the Southwest Theatre Association, and the American Association of Community Theatre. DCT has been the host for state and regional festivals. Denton Community Theatre, Inc. is a vital force in the arts in Denton. When DCT was founded in 1969 the biggest challenge was to find a home. With the support of the City of Denton Parks and Recreation Board, the Denton City Council allowed DCT to renovate and locate in the old City Hall - Central Fire Station. DCT named it the Firehouse Theatre because during some performances a fire truck left screaming from the garage located directly below the theatre. The renovation of the Central Fire Station became the headquarters for the Police Department in 1981. The Greater Denton Arts Council with the support of the Denton Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Denton again allowed DCT to move into the Denton Civic Center. It was to be temporary housing until the new Arts Complex and Theatre was built by the Greater Denton Arts Council. In 1988 the City of Denton could no longer provide adequate office space for DCT, and also it had become difficult to schedule a season of performances in the Civic Center due to increased use of the building. Since the Greater Denton Arts Council Theatre was not yet built (lack of funds) the search for a home was on again. The Greater Denton Arts Council came through with office and "found" performance space in the Center for the Visual Arts. This was to be another temporary space. In 1990, with the Greater Denton Arts Council Theatre still not under construction, the DCT Governing Board of Directors began the search for a permanent theatrical home. The Governing Board of DCT obtained a contract to buy the Campus Theatre, a grand old movie house in downtown Denton. DCT saw the acquisition and renovation of the building as beneficial to all the arts organizations and groups in Denton. DCT proposed that the Greater Denton Arts Council expand the Arts Complex to include the Campus Theatre. Late 1990, the Campus Theatre was purchased by GDAC. An Architect was hired and plans for renovating the building were developed. A major capitol campaign of $1.8 million led the way for the renovation and restoration of the Campus Theatre. DCT has leased the building from GDAC, and is the resident and managing company since construction was completed in May of 1995. An eighteen member Governing Board of Directors, elected by the membership, determines the policies and provides the financial leadership for DCT. A fifteen member Production Board, appointed by the Governing Board, provides artistic and production leadership. A full time managing director is hired to administer the business affairs of DCT.
